Summer Tattoo Care: Sun, Sweat and Swimming

Summer brings out the tattoos - and the questions. Once the sun's out, the studio fills up with people asking the same three things: can I still go swimming, is sweating going to mess up my healing, and how do I stop this thing from fading before the year's even out. Fair questions, so let's go through them properly.

Sun

Sun is the biggest long-term threat to a tattoo, healed or not. UV breaks down pigment over time, which is why an old tattoo left uncovered on holiday every year ends up soft and faded while the same piece kept under sunscreen stays sharp for decades. If your tattoo's fresh, keep it out of direct sun entirely until it's fully healed - no exceptions, no "it's only twenty minutes." Once it's healed, cover it or use a high-factor, tattoo-friendly sunscreen any time it'll be exposed. Reapply more than you think you need to; sweat and towelling off both wear it away fast.

Sweat

Sweat itself isn't the enemy - it's what comes with it. A fresh tattoo sitting under sweaty clothing, or getting rubbed and irritated at the gym, is what causes problems. If you can, hold off on heavy training for the first week or so, and if you can't, keep the area loose, clean, and pat it dry rather than wiping it. Once healed, sweat is genuinely nothing to worry about - just rinse and pat dry after a workout the same as you would anyway.

Swimming

This is the one people push back on most, but it holds: no pools, no sea, no lakes, no baths until the tattoo is completely healed. Chlorine, salt water and standing water all carry a real risk of irritation and infection on broken skin, and soaking a healing tattoo undoes the work your skin's doing to close over. Showers are fine. Submerging is not, until it's fully healed - not just scabbed over and looking fine.

The general rule

Fresh tattoo: no direct sun, no sweat-soaked clothing sitting on it, no submerging in water, until it's fully healed. Healed tattoo: sunscreen whenever it's exposed, and the rest looks after itself. Skin that's been kept protected through summer after summer is the skin that keeps a tattoo looking sharp for the long haul - it's a small habit that pays off for years.

If you've got a healing tattoo and you're not sure whether something's normal or worth a look, get in touch - better to ask than guess.
