Looking for a Tattoo Artist in East London? Here's What to Know
East London has more tattoo studios per square mile than almost anywhere else in the country, which is great if you want choice and a nightmare if you're the one trying to pick. People find us through Google, word of mouth, and Instagram, but they're not always sure what actually separates a good studio from one to avoid. So here's the honest version.
Start with the work, not the studio. A nice shopfront or a slick Instagram grid doesn't tell you much about whether an artist is right for you. Look at healed tattoos, not just fresh ones — anyone can make a tattoo look sharp on day one; it's how it settles over months and years that tells you whether the artist actually knows what they're doing. If a studio's whole feed is fresh work and you can't find a single healed photo, that's a gap worth asking about.
Specialism matters more than people think. Tattooing isn't one skill, it's dozens of them. Someone brilliant at fine line botanical work isn't necessarily the right person for a bold traditional piece, and someone who's spent years on Japanese-style tattooing — which is where I've put most of my own thirty-odd years — brings a completely different approach to composition and flow than someone working purely in black and grey realism. At a studio like ours, we've got artists across a real range of styles, so it's less about finding "a tattoo artist in East London" and more about finding the right one for what you actually want.
Talk to them before you commit. A proper consultation tells you a lot. Do they ask questions about placement, sizing, how the piece will age on your body specifically, or do they just nod along? We don't do online booking for exactly this reason — every tattoo starts with a contact form enquiry or an in-person chat, because a five-minute form can't replace an actual conversation about what you want and whether it'll work.
Hygiene and professionalism should be a given, not a bonus. Single-use needles, proper sterilisation, a studio that's registered and inspected. If any of that feels like it's being glossed over, walk away.
And don't underestimate location and vibe. You'll likely be sat in the chair for hours, sometimes across multiple sessions, so a studio that feels comfortable and easy to get to actually matters.
